Newspaper article: Weather Chaos in China
Let’s start with the definition of “newsworthy”. The meaning is that of sufficient interest to the public or a special audience to warrant press attention or coverage. This article in The Straits Times has proved itself to be newsworthy enough that it caught my serious attention.
China is currently battling the harshest snowstorms in half a century which stranded millions of Chinese heading home for the celebration of Chinese New Year which is every year’s most important and significant festive seasons among all Chinese. The heavy snowfalls around China provinces, especially Gunagzhou, left millions stranded in gridlocked traffic which come to a virtual standstill. Many Chinese are rushing for essential supplies of food and water although preparations for the Chinese New Year are accelerating among all Chinese families. Blackouts occur in several provinces as the coal supplies are cut off because of the extreme weather. The storms have affected about 78 million people and left 24 dead to weather-linked accidents across some 14 provinces. Battling with sliding global markets and inflation which brought the Shanghai stock index down 7.2 percent, China has estimated to have being chalked up 22.09 billion yuan in damages.
I firmly believe that the weather chaos in China is one of the wake-up calls for the impact of global warming across the globe. Industrailisation and globalisation around the world have resulted in increased rate of release of harmful gases into the atmosphere during the 20th century and recent times. The slight increase in temperature and sea levels around the world may be insignificant in figures, however the picayune difference changes the global climate system which has brought catastrophic storms and extreme weather conditions around the world. As a result, it has agonised the world economy with billions of dollars of damages solely, and the amount figure multiples yearly without fail. In addition, the case of rising sea levels has threatened to force many low-lying countries to abandon the submerging from the invincible power of rising water. One of the countries is Shanghai, China. which is China’s economic power house. The rising sea levels will eventually swallow up the prosperous and burgeoning city state, and China’s economical progress will come to a standstill if no action is taken or the actions come too late for the unprecedented catastrophic event, just like a ticking time bomb.
Peole’s daily lives will be adversely affected due to the climate change. Farms’ productivities will be marred and virtually destroyed by the harsh weather condition, and may take several months to recover, This will affect the food production and people will be bearing with hunger as food stocks across the country are depleting expenditously. Severe storms destroy homes and shelters for many, leaving them homeless or forced to abandon their homeland as the storms annihilate their land. Water supplies will be cut off due to water shortage or lack of fresh water supplies from major rivers or streams running through the country. The storms will affect the air, sea, and land traffic and people will not be able to move from one place to another easily, resulting from isolation to battle with the harsh weather conditions solely which will result in loss of lives among the poors.
In the view of the whole country, the country’s economical progress will be affected as excessive funds are used for medical aids and supplies for the displaced people. China may be able to cope with such situations due to aggrandising growth in economical power. However, in the near future, if nothing is done to decelerate the change in climate system, China’s economic growth will be incalculably hampered. Those smaller countries incapable of coping with extreme changes in climate will be deeply scarred by inaccessible capabilities to recover their losses, and may take many years to revert back the economic growth. The country’s global income rate will plummer due to reduce exports to other countries, which will eventually nose-dive the stock market in the country among other investors around the world. The most important note is that if nothing or little is done to decelerate the rate of climate changes, the future world will come to a grinding halt, and economical progress will be a myth.
Global warming and climate change are neither a thing of the past, nor even science fiction. It IS a reality now given that many evidence of results of global warming and climate change are surfacing throughout the globe, and Singapore is not spared either. Therefore we must take actions to contribute to be environment-friendly by going “green”. Each individual actions may be insignficant, however if everyone’s efforts are compiled together, postive impacts and results may surface eventually. We must not take the impacts of global warming and climate change for granted, for it will contrarily affect our very next generations to come.

Topic: Going To The Movies
1. What was the last movie you saw at the theater?
I Am Legend!!! Love it!!
2. Did you enjoy watching it? Why or why not.
I like it so much that I rewatched the movie several times on net! Being a fan if sci-fi movie, I like the zombies attacking Robert Neville (will smith), the mustang car, deserted New York City, the explosion when the zombies are attacking Robert’s house, and many many more!
(joking) Imagine I am the last person on earth…as a fan of gadgets like handphones, cameras etc, Iwill own them all and enjoy myself!! Hmm, free fast food restaurant, free lamborghini, free electricity bills, everything’s free! (joking)
However they are several sad scenes which are heartwarming and heartbroken. The heartwarming is that Robert took good care of his canine pet, Sam, even though he had lost his loved ones because of the plague. The most saddening scene is that after Sam was bitten by mutated dogs (Sam is only immune to air-bourne plague), and Robert had to strangle his dog to death, which is when my heart cried to see such a scene that sacrificing a loved one is necessary for the sake of survival to find a cure for the deadly plague, and Robert is the only person on Earth to bear the hope. In the end, Robert had to end his life through grenade explosion inside his laboratory to sacrifice a cure to a woman and her child (they managed to find Robert through radio signals sent by him) and both of them escape through a tunnel in the lab (All three of them were standing behind a shock-proof glass panals inside his lab while the zombies gathered outside).
3. What’s the next movie you wish to go see in the theater?
Perhaps I want to watch Kung Fu Dunk by Jay Chou?
Newspaper article: ACS(I) among world’s best in IB exams
I was taken by total surprise and stupefaction when I read this article mentioning about some students went for the International Baccalaureate(IB) examinations in November last year and performed among the best in the world. There were 9 out of 357 full scorers from Anglo-Chinese school( independent) for the examination, and I cannot believe that they emerged out of only 20 full scorers i the world. One candidate, a cancer survivor, managed to get the full mark of 45 marks despite having intensive treatments for his cancer, and his perseverance, positive and courageous attitude towards illness and studies actually make me touched of what not everyone can come across in their lives.
Education is the only sources that Singapore needs to be depend on for the survival of the country itself since there is nil natural resources in this tiny island. I believe many students struggled to work hard to score for their examinations and reach their goals in life. In addition, I believe that there is an increasing number of students qualifying for top cohort in their schools. That is why our standard for education has been moderating to a higher level every year so that it encourages more students to strive hard and aim for their scholarships, diplomas, degrees, and other special education awards for their future which is possible for everyone to aim for. We may be struggling in our studies for the preparation of major examinations like, PSLE, ”O” levels, “A” levels, and so on, however the real and ultimate rewarding experience comes in when these efforts that we have put in for our whole schooling life finally pay off by reaching goals we have never expected before. Even so, more and more students in Singapore are pursuing for higher studies!
The exquisite results pertaining to the IB examinations performed by the ACS students have made Singapore to take a major step in gaining world recognition in our systematic and efficient education system for the schools. Not only many local overseas students have performed well in their studies overboard, but they are more foreign students coming to Singapore to pursue their studies, and they too have also performed well. There are even foreign teachers coming to Singapore to pursue their teaching careers here. With Singapore being recognised as having one of most prestigious education system in the world, it is important for us to maintain or improve the standards from our very own hands. Our everyday performance in schools determines the final results of our future and Singapore’s reputation for its reputable education system. If there is a serious flaw in our results, it may jeopardise and ruin the present reputation of Singapore’s educating society.
Maintaining and improving our academic results will affect our future lives positively. Not we will be able to reach our goals easier and earlier by pursuing strategic and smart studying process and implementing them in our academic studies, but we are also able to display, and promote our studying skills to students who are weaker in their studies. Eventually both parties will be benefitted academically and communicatetively. In addition, the more hardworking and sedulous ones will be given more reputable opportunities to study and work overboard to pursue their ultimate studying dreams and they will have the most educational experiences that can be shared among many people so that they will also pursue and drive their dreams into the ultimate heights of their meaningful and purposeful lives. In this way, it will lead Singapore’s economy into new heights and able to reach out to many new global opportunities for our next generations to come.
With so many opportunites, goals and dreams in sight for us to pursue by education, we must treasure them and be able to set positive mindsets for our bright future. I am sure that everyone will have their special talents in them to develop and make full use of them to make our educational lives more meaningful and consciencious. I am certain that everyone of us will be able to contribute to Singapore’s society effectively and attain purposeful results, and therefore certainly proud to be a loyal, patriotic, and valued member of the flourishing and burgeoning Singapore’s society.
